For the past seven years J Bowra has been bringing intense, soulful house, and techno to clubs as well as intimate desert music events in New Mexico. He is known for being one of the main advocates of minimal techno/tribal techno in his area.

His style is born out of a wide range of musical tastes. Growing up he found much inspiration from underground hip-hop, and his varied taste in music included artists such as Pink Floyd, Madonna, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis. When a friend introduced him to the music of Bad Boy Bill and Plastikman, J Bowra was instantly drawn to the energy and emotion of techno and house music. He especially has a strong influence from Detroit legends like Derrick May and Richie Hawtin, as well as Carl Cox.

This versatile DJ has played many prominent events in the electronic music scene including all of the Celestial Sessions events (1, 2 and 3). He was also a featured DJ at the 2007 Santa Fe Muzik Fest, along with such performers as Rabbit In The Moon, Everclear, and Public Enemy. Bowra has played numerous events hosted by PartyCrashers, and captivated crowds in the almost cosmic desert gatherings of Desert Moon Productions. He never stops advancing in his musical career. As founder of his label Funkteo Records, established in 2004, he plans to release tracks in Winter 2008 with MyQuill, another Funkteo DJ/Producer.

What makes J Bowra such a skilled and talented DJ is that his resume includes experience working a large venue just as successfully as he can a small, intimate gathering. In addition, he has taken a proactive role in being a leader in the music scene by organizing events. One of his landmark achievements has been organizing Party In The Park, a positive, upbeat annual music event featuring a host of DJs who perform for the whole community, not just a particular crowd. He has also been spinning at this event for the past three years.

Regardless of the venue or genre, J Bowra plays for the sole ambition of bringing people together. “Music is this one special thing that can bring all different walks of people together for the single purpose of groove. It makes us forget about our differences, life’s troubles, and be uplifted.” And when the crowd is lost in his intense musical energy on the dance floor, they understand exactly what he means by groove. His sound is clean and crisp, yet he still retains a sexy and underground feel in all his tracks.
